Championship Game
D5 - Wash, Rinse, Repeat - Scorpions buffalo Beers again, seize D1 crown 3-2 in OT
D4 - Beat the Clock - Scorpions score in final ticks, sting Beers 4-3
In the latest chapter of HLI's Hatfields and McCoys, the Scorpions denied the Beers again winning a gut wrenching 3-2 overtime winner-take-all D1 championship game. With the win, the Scorpions repeated their Fall D1 title win also against the Beers. The Scorpions now have won the Long Island Cup 10 times, including four in the past six seasons.

The two feisty teams played a scintillating playoff game. Each had numerous scoring chances, near misses, and stellar defensive/goaltending plays. Game play was even, taut, and spirited. The Scorpions struck early on a Dan McGrath goal just 25 seconds into the game. The Beers countered with two second period goals 90 seconds apart to only see McGrath tie it a mere two mintues later. The score then stayed stagnant but the play remained robust. In end-to-end action, the teams exchanged fruitless attempts to decide in regulation. Into overtime, the teams continued to probe for the golden biscuit but ultimately a misguided Beers offensive zone pinch sprung a fateful 2-on-1. Seizing upon the defensive miscue, D1 League MVP Greg Thompson feathered an exquisite dime to a streaking Charlie Mott who buried the titlewinner. Thompson assisted on all three Scorpions goals and was a force throughout the Scorpions playoff run. Thompson, in on six of the Scorpions last seven goals, led the team in scoring with 7 goals and 5 helpers.

Capping an unforseen playoff run, Redrum commanded again from in front to upend Queens Finest 6-3 to win the D2 championship. This title is the first Redrum championship in four years and just the second Long Island Cup in the organization's history.

Redrum briefly trailed for four first period minutes before two quick goals late in the opening period flipped the score. The momentum continued in the second with four more goals that rendered the result imminent. Leading the offensive charge was D2 League MVP Phil Jewel. The quick, lanky blueliner notched a hat trick in this ultimate game while negating Queens top guns on the other end. For the playoffs, Jewel led Redrum's scoring with 5 goals.

E4 - The Big Tahuna - Bruisers thwart Minutemen 4-2 to claim E1 title
Consumating a late season surge, the Bruisers locked down the Minutemen 4-2 to seize the E1 Championshp. The Bruisers closed the season with seven consecutive victories to claim their first Long Island Cup in 5 1/2 years. Before this recent drought, the Bruisers previously won four LI Cup championships.

Shaking off a quick first minute Minutemen goal, the Bruisers responded three times to establish an insurmountable 3-1 lead. This first period lead vitally enabled the Bruisers to ride its defense to thwart and frustrate the Minutemen. Anchoring this tried-and-true playoff winning defense-first approach was E1 League MVP Mike "Tuna" Tuniewicz . The big goaltender was stout throughout and made several key stops especially in the frantic Minutemen third period push. Tuna's winning performance continued a playoff run that saw him give up just 5 goals while turning away 57 shots in three playoff games.

EE4 - The Defense Rests - Misfits stifle PLT 6-1 to wear E2 crown
Refusing any sniff of prime scoring chances, the Misfits shutdown PLT to earn a 6-1 E2 championship win. This E2 title is the Misfits second Long Island Cup adding to the prior Spring 15 title.

The Misfits broke open a tight 1-0 game with four second period goals from four different goalscorers. This balanced offensive approach paced the Misfits during the playoffs. It was not, however, the key to the Misfits title run. A cohesive Misfits defensive systematically choked their own end and denied PLT any real offensive pressure. Spearheading the lockdown defense was E2 League MVP Matt Rubin. The lanky backliner imbued a determination and toughness and impacted the game in numerous ways. Whether disrupting the neutral zone, patrolling the kitchen, or matching up with key PLT threats, Rubin nullified any PLT scoring effort.

3C4 - The Cardiac Kings - Wasps again rally late, power past Fire and Ice 5-4 in OT to claim 3C crown
Playing with fire in another playoff heart thumper, the Wasps fortuitously tied the game late and grabbed the 3C title with a 5-4 sudden death beat of Fire and Ice 4-3. The win was the Wasps third late comeback win and continued their recent playoff success. This title is their third Long Island Cup in the past four seasons.

This championship match was a taut, gritty affair that saw the teams separated by no more than a goal. The Wasps, who entered the third ahead 2-1, looked cooked when Mark Becker eked Fire and Ice ahead 4-3 with just 3:25 to go. The final twist, however, came a minute later when Fire and Ice was called for high sticking. The ensuing powerplay enabled Steve Dmitri to bury a nifty kitchen helper from Dave Backus. Dmitiri also factored in the overtime winner. He feed 3C League MVP Joe Russo at the point and the big backliner wired the breadmaker top shelf. Russo, who also assisted on the opening goal, also scored twice in the previous Wasp one goal win. Russo performed equally well defensively as his quickness limited sustained pressure and puck movement spurred the Wasp attack out of their own end.

3D6 - Not So Fast - Bucs pull a rabbit, stage implausible 4 goal rally to stun Crokers 6-5
Staring down the Gremlins from Playoff Past, the Crokers left little to chance and commanded a 8-0 3D championship win over the Bucs. With the win, the Croker finally raised their second Long Island Cup after enduring their previous game choke and five prior seasons' tortuous bridemaid finishes.

The Crokers appeared amnesic when they scored just a minute into the game but their tangled past loomed heavy yet again as they could not muster another halfway in. It was only when Doug DiDominica buried a lunch pail putback mid-second that hope emerged. Relief quickly followed when Rob Olson potted two more in short order. Joy then ensued when 3D League MVP Brian Maher capped a personal four goal third period. Maher's most critical work came earlier in the playoffs when he singlehandedly rallied the troops down two with another third period nattie.
