Long Island Cup Spring 2011 Championship Games

B League [box scores] | [draw] | [back to top]
Championship Game
B4 - King Me - Klash pull away late to trump GN-Bruins 6-3 and repeat as B champs
Scoring three unanswered in the third, Klash-B separated from the resilient GN-Bruins to wear the B league crown 6-3. The Klash championship win defended their Fall '10 B league title and marked their fourth LI Cup.

The Klash started strong and smartly built a 3-0 eight minutes in. The Bruins remained poised and worked their way back to tie by the end of the second. With the play spirited and both goalies sterling in net, the match turned on a fortuitous third period changeup of a shot that essentially cinched the game. Atypically, the Klash playoff and season success stemmed from a stout defense. Leading the Klash steely D was B League MVP Matt Withers Withers, often a one man zone, repeatedly disrupted the neutral zone and patrolled the kitchen like a dog guarding a bone. At critical times in this title game, Withers negated Bruins' odd-man opportunites and safeguarded the crease enabling the Klash to keep the Bruins at bay until the fateful winning tally.

Relying on their playoff experience and poise, Tremblays Pub stymied the Phantoms' upset bid and clinched the C League championship 6-2. With the victory, Tremblays Pub defended their Fall C league title and secured their first spring LI Cup, fourth overall.

Despite being outshot and outplayed during the first two periods, Tremblays emerged with a 3-1 advantage. Leading the way, C League MVP Jonathan Parrella turned away 27 shots in the busy opening two periods. Pivotally, he stoned and frustrated the Phantoms' high octance first line. He repeatedly turned away point blank opportunties and held the fort until Tremblays steadied the game. In the third, Jeremy Taubes scored two powerplay goals to put the game out reach and ice the championship.

DD6 - Wagon Whoopee - Pioneers-D corral Outlaws-D 4-2 to capture D2 title
Shaking off an uncharacteristic mid-game lull, the Pioneers-D played lock down third period defense to hold off the Outlaws-D 4-2 and capture the D2 championship. The D2 crown is the Pioneers-D first LI Cup in three seasons.

The Pioneers-D built a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead middle of the second. Spearheading the Pioneers offensive attack was D2 League MVP Tommy Andreachio. Andreachio, who scored in each playoff game and eight goals total, netted the final two Pioneer markers to forge the 4-0 lead. Inexplicably, up four, the Pioneers sagged and the Outlaws surged with two quickies to close 4-2 at the end of two. During the second intermission, however, the Pioneer veterans refocused the skittish squad. In the third, the Pioneers defense limited the Outlaws' dynamic attack to mostly perimeter onetimers.

Executing a near perfect gameplan, the Rats scored early, scored middle, and scored late to overwhelm the Wolverines 5-1 for the 3E crown. With the win, the Rats raised the LI Cup for the second time, the first in four years.

During the match, the Rats systematically imposed their style of play on the Wolverines. Keeping play simple and within their abilities, the Rats employed a balanced offense to methodically open a comfortable lead and deny the Wolverines any comeback opportunity. Backboning the Rats postseason success was the stellar play of 3E League MVP Luis Orquera.
