Fall 2002 - D1 Preview

The FALL 2002 playoffs are eagerly anticipated and promise to be as hotly contested as the regular season. Below we provide a preview for the D1 League. This preview is only intended for discussion fodder and entertainment value. Good luck to all in their ‘Run to the Long Island Cup’.

D1 League

This is the up-for-grabs playoff draw that has everything - youth, veteran experience, offensive firepower, defensive prowess, great goaltending, rivalry, controversy, aspiring champions, resurrected past champs and a sure-bet playoff powerhouse. Seek what you may but rest assured its here in the top-to-bottom, most competitive division in HLI Fall 2002. The regular season champs LI-STARS are poised for a drink from the Cup. They have reached the championship round each of the past four seasons. Bridesmaids for the past three the moment is now to seize the spotlight. They have added to their impressive array of offensive might and will score goals in bunches. Their challenge only is within. Can they summon the mental tenacity that separates championship teams. This mental tenacity is the hallmark of the SABRES, the masters of playoff pressure. Having yet to taste defeat in an HLI playoff draw the Sabres have no reason not to believe. Season after season they conjure up whatever's needed to get it done. It also helps that they have Mr. Clutch between the pipes. Looking for return to long ago championship glory is the resurgent BLADERUNNERS. Seemingly on life support and all but flatlining the Blades raced back into contention and have the most momentum heading into this free-for-all. They will rely on defense and goaltending to win close games. The biggest question mark is the LI-BRUINS. The Bruins, who at one point during the season stood tied for first, have slumped at the end. The Bruins have the weapons both frontline and backline but have struggled throughout the organization's history with the demands of a extended playoff run. The GRIZZLIES have salvaged their season with a desperate charge into the postseason. They appeared to suffer from an summer championship hangover resulting in an uncharacteristic seat in the cellar. Their key is to play with vim and vigor and limit defensive breakdowns.
